40-year-old Turkish national swimmer Alper Sunaçoğlu swam to the small Greek island of Farmakosini in the Aegean Sea where a Greek military unit is stationed and unfurled a Turkish flag in an act of defiance against the Greek ‘occupation’ of the island.

Located in the Aegean Sea just 5 kilometers (3 miles) away from Turkey’s western province of Aydın, the tiny Greek island of Farmakosini is home to a small Greek military detachment consisting of about 60 troops and three Coast Guard boats.

On Thursday at 5.30 pm local time (2.30 pm GMT) Turkish national swimmer Alper Sunaçoğlu (40), who has been training for long-distance marathon swims, jumped into the water at Turkey’s coastal town of Didim in Aydın province and headed for Farmakosini. Upon reaching the island after a two-hour swim, he climbed ashore and unfurled a Turkish flag in an act of defiance against the Greek presence there.

On Saturday Sunaçoğlu held a press conference in Turkey’s southwestern town of Bodrum at the local offices of the Patriotic Party (VP) to share his story as well as the photographs of him swimming to the island and unfurling the flag.

“I wanted to explain to the public that this land seeped in Turkish blood still belongs to Turkey, to raise awareness and to deliver a message in the name of Turkish might,” said Sunaçoğlu, who accused Greece of taking over this and dozens of other islands “right before our very eyes” despite the Treaty of Lausanne forbidding “even a single nail from being hammered on them.”

He also claimed that the number of troops and equipment deployed there was increasing more and more each day and that neither government nor military were doing anything about it.

“I will continue activities such as this,” he added, “It is our duty to save and protect the motherland.”

Neither Turkish nor Greek Coast Guards had reacted to Sunaçoğlu’s swim, though previous attempts to reach Farmakosini by Sunaçoğlu had been postponed over security concerns.

Patriotic Party Bodrum Chair Sinan Hıncal thanked Sunaçoğlu and offering his full support for the act of defiance, “I hope this sensitivity Alper showed towards our occupied lands will set an example for all Turkish citizens.”

Following the press conference Sunaçoğlu left Bodrum and returned to the southern province of Mersin where he resides.
